Two Very Different Approaches to ERP
Walk into any Indian CA's office and ask what accounting software their clients use. The answer, overwhelmingly, will be TallyPrime. Walk into an Indian startup and ask the same question — you will probably hear Zoho Books. Both are excellent tools, but they come from very different worlds.
TallyPrime is desktop-first, deeply customizable, and trusted by millions of Indian businesses for its rock-solid accounting engine. It works offline, handles complex multi-company and multi-branch setups, and supports every Indian compliance requirement from GST to TDS to e-invoicing.
Zoho Books is cloud-first, API-friendly, and designed for modern workflows. It integrates natively with the Zoho ecosystem and offers a clean REST API for custom connections. It is easier to set up but less flexible for complex Indian accounting scenarios.
For ecommerce sellers, the question is not which is "better" — it is which integrates better with the tools you already use.
Integration Capabilities Compared
Here is where the two platforms stand when it comes to connecting with ecommerce, payments, and compliance tools:
Shopify integration: Zoho Books has a built-in Shopify app. TallyPrime has no native Shopify support — but ERPPlugs provides a dedicated TallyPrime-Shopify connector with GST mapping and inventory sync.
Amazon India: Neither has a native Amazon India connector. Zoho Books can use Zapier for basic order sync (no fee tracking). ERPPlugs provides a full Amazon India connector for TallyPrime with TCS and marketplace fee handling.
Razorpay: Zoho Books has a native Razorpay integration. TallyPrime needs ERPPlugs for Razorpay reconciliation — which includes TDS and commission tracking that the Zoho integration does not.

Offline access: TallyPrime works fully offline. Zoho Books requires internet for every operation. For Indian businesses in areas with unreliable connectivity, this is not a small difference.
The Real Decision Factors
If your accountant or CA already uses Tally — and most Indian CAs do — switching to Zoho Books means they need to learn a new system. This is friction that many businesses underestimate. Your CA knows every shortcut in Tally, knows how to run reports, knows how to handle edge cases during audits. That institutional knowledge has real value.
On the other hand, if you are a cloud-native business with a distributed team, Zoho Books makes collaboration easier. Multiple users can work simultaneously from different locations without VPN tunnels to a Tally server.
For ecommerce specifically, the integration quality matters more than the ERP itself. A well-integrated TallyPrime (via ERPPlugs) beats a poorly integrated Zoho Books every time. The connector quality — how it handles GST, fees, returns, and edge cases — is what determines whether you save time or create new problems.
Our Recommendation
If you already use TallyPrime: Stay with it. Use ERPPlugs to add the ecommerce and payment gateway integrations you need. You will get better accounting depth, offline reliability, and your CA will thank you.
If you are starting fresh and cloud-first: Zoho Books is a solid choice, especially if you are already in the Zoho ecosystem. But check whether its Amazon India and marketplace fee handling meets your needs — many sellers find it lacking.
