Assumes the same DBUs per hour for every type, which is a simplification: serverless and classic compute can consume different DBUs for the same work. List prices per DBU (Premium plan, AWS US East) from Databricks pricing; SQL Serverless DBUs per hour by size from Databricks documentation, checked 21 October 2026. Excludes networking, data transfer, and features billed under separate SKUs such as model serving.
How does Databricks pricing work?
Databricks bills in Databricks Units (DBUs), a unit of processing capacity consumed per hour while compute runs. How many DBUs a cluster uses per hour depends on its instance types and node count, and Databricks shows that figure when you configure the compute. The price of each DBU depends on the compute type, plan tier, cloud and region.
Compute types are priced very differently. Jobs Compute, for scheduled production pipelines, costs the least per DBU; All-Purpose Compute, for interactive notebooks, costs several times more for the same DBUs; and Databricks SQL warehouses sit in between. Moving scheduled work off all-purpose clusters is often the largest single saving.
On classic compute, the virtual machines run in your own cloud account and are billed separately by your cloud provider. Serverless compute runs in Databricks' account, so its higher price per DBU already includes the machines. Storage sits in your own object storage, such as Amazon S3, and is billed by the cloud provider.
How do you estimate a Databricks bill?
Monthly DBU cost = DBUs per hour × running hours × price per DBU. On classic compute, add cloud VM cost per hour × running hours. Add storage: terabytes stored × price per terabyte.
Example: an all-purpose cluster using 4 DBUs an hour runs 8 hours a day for 22 days, consuming 704 DBUs. At $0.55 per DBU that is $387.20 to Databricks. Four m5.xlarge machines at $0.192 an hour each add $135.17 from AWS, and 5 TB of S3 storage at $23 adds $115, for $637.37 a month.
What drives Databricks costs up?
Scheduled jobs running on all-purpose clusters, clusters without auto-termination left idle, oversized clusters with autoscaling ceilings set too high, and SQL warehouses that never stop are the usual causes. Cluster policies, auto-termination, job clusters for pipelines and spot instances for fault-tolerant work fix most of them. Planning a move to Databricks or between platforms? Our data engineering team can model the full cost before you commit, and the Snowflake cost calculator helps compare the two.
Frequently asked questions
How is Databricks cost calculated?
Databricks bills compute in Databricks Units (DBUs). Each cluster or SQL warehouse consumes a number of DBUs per hour while it runs, and you pay a price per DBU that depends on the compute type, plan tier, cloud and region. On classic compute you also pay your cloud provider for the virtual machines; serverless prices include them. Storage sits in your own cloud object storage and is billed by the cloud provider.
How much does a Databricks DBU cost?
Premium plan list prices on AWS US East, checked 21 October 2026, are about $0.15 per DBU for Jobs Compute ($0.35 serverless), $0.55 for All-Purpose Compute ($0.75 serverless), $0.22 for SQL Classic, $0.55 for SQL Pro and $0.70 for SQL Serverless. Classic prices exclude the cloud machines, serverless prices include them, and committed-use contracts are usually discounted, so use the price on your own contract where you have one.
How can I reduce Databricks costs?
Run scheduled pipelines on Jobs Compute instead of all-purpose clusters, set auto-termination so idle clusters shut down, cap autoscaling with cluster policies, use spot instances for fault-tolerant workloads, and set SQL warehouses to stop when idle. Reviewing the system billing tables for the most expensive jobs and clusters usually shows where most of the spend goes.
