GST formula

How do you calculate GST?

Multiply by the rate to add GST; divide by (100 + rate) to take it out.

To add GST to a price that excludes tax, multiply the price by the GST rate and divide by 100. The taxable value stays the same, and the invoice total is the taxable value plus GST.

To remove GST from a price that already includes it, first find the taxable value by multiplying the price by 100 and dividing by 100 plus the rate. The GST is whatever is left. Do not simply take 18% off a GST-inclusive price: that overstates the tax, because the 18% was charged on the smaller taxable value, not on the total.

Example: a service priced at ₹10,000 before tax at 18% carries ₹1,800 GST, so the invoice total is ₹11,800. Working backwards, ₹11,800 including 18% GST is ₹11,800 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹10,000 taxable value and ₹1,800 GST. Sold within one state, that ₹1,800 is shown as ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST.

GST formulas

Add GST
GST = amount × rate ÷ 100
Total = amount + GST
Remove GST
GST = amount − (amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate))
Taxable value = amount − GST
Split
Intra-state: CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2
Inter-state: IGST = GST

What are the GST rates after 22 September 2025?

GST now has two main rates: a merit rate of 5% and a standard rate of 18%, plus a special de-merit rate of 40% for a select few goods and services. The 56th GST Council meeting replaced the earlier four-rate structure, and the new rates took effect on 22 September 2025. The lower rates of 0%, 0.25% and 3% continue for the specific items they cover.

The date on the invoice matters. A supply made before 22 September 2025 was taxed at the earlier rates, which included 12% and 28%, so set the invoice date in the calculator to see the right slabs for an old invoice or a credit note against one.

One exception: pan masala, gutkha, cigarettes, chewing tobacco such as zarda, unmanufactured tobacco and bidi did not move to the new rates on 22 September 2025. They continued at their existing GST rate and compensation cess, according to the same release. This calculator does not add compensation cess.

Tax split

When do you charge CGST and SGST, and when IGST?

It depends on whether the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state. On an intra-state supply, the GST rate is split into two equal halves: Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST), or Union Territory GST (UTGST) in a union territory. On an inter-state supply, the whole rate is charged as Integrated GST (IGST). The total tax is the same either way; only the heads change.

For example, a Pune business selling goods at 18% that are delivered to a customer in Mumbai charges 9% CGST and 9% SGST. The same goods delivered to a customer in Bengaluru carry 18% IGST. Choose the supply type in the calculator to see the split.

Choosing a rate

Which GST rate applies to my product or service?

The rate depends on the HSN code of the goods or the SAC code of the service, not on the type of business. Look up the code in the CBIC GST rate notifications and use the rate in force on the invoice date. Use the 40% rate only if your item is one of the de-merit goods or services actually listed at 40%.

Once you know the rate, the free GST invoice generator turns the same numbers into a printable tax invoice. If you raise invoices every day, compare GST billing software or browse the other free ERP tools.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

To add GST, multiply the amount by the GST rate and divide by 100: GST on ₹1,000 at 18% is ₹180, so the total is ₹1,180. To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price, use GST = amount − (amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate)): ₹1,180 including 18% GST is ₹1,000 plus ₹180 GST.

What are the GST rates in India now?

From 22 September 2025, following the 56th GST Council meeting, GST uses a merit rate of 5% and a standard rate of 18%, with a special 40% rate for a select few de-merit goods and services. Rates of 0%, 0.25% and 3% continue for specific items. Some tobacco products stayed on their earlier rate plus compensation cess when the new rates started. Always confirm the rate for your item's HSN or SAC code in the CBIC rate notifications.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

On an intra-state supply, where the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state or union territory, GST is split equally into CGST and SGST (or UTGST in a union territory). At 18%, that is 9% CGST and 9% SGST. On an inter-state supply, the full rate is charged as IGST, for example 18% IGST.
