Create a GST Tax Invoice

The preview updates as you type. Your draft is saved only in this browser.

Not an e-invoice. This tool does not generate an IRN or an e-invoice QR code. If your aggregate turnover exceeded ₹5 crore in any financial year from 2017-18, you must issue e-invoices through the Invoice Registration Portal (Notification 10/2023-Central Tax, from 1 August 2023).

Invoice requirements

What must a GST tax invoice include?

A tax invoice must carry the details listed in Rule 46 of the CGST Rules. The main ones are below, with where each appears in this generator.
ClauseWhat the invoice must showIn this tool
(a)Supplier name, address and GSTINSupplier
(b)Consecutive serial number, up to 16 characters, unique for the financial yearInvoice number
(c)Date of issueInvoice date
(d)Recipient name, address and GSTIN or UIN, if registeredRecipient
(e)Unregistered recipient, taxable value ₹50,000 or more: name, address, delivery address, state name and codeRecipient and delivery address
(g)HSN code for goods or SAC for servicesLine items
(h)Description of goods or servicesLine items
(i)Quantity and unitLine items
(j)Total value of supplyLine items and totals
(k)Taxable value after discount or abatementLine items
(l)Rate of tax (central, state, integrated, union territory, cess)GST rate per line
(m)Amount of tax for each headTotals

(o)Delivery address, if different from place of supplyDelivery address
(p)Whether tax is payable on reverse chargeReverse charge
(q)Signature or digital signature of the supplier or authorised representativeSignatory line
(r)QR code with embedded IRN, where e-invoicing appliesNot generated

Two details are easy to miss. The invoice number must be a consecutive serial number of no more than 16 characters, using letters, numbers, hyphens or slashes, and it must be unique for the financial year. And under clause (q), a proviso says a signature or digital signature is not needed when the invoice is issued electronically under the Information Technology Act, 2000. Invoice copies

How many copies of a GST invoice do you need?

Three for goods and two for services. Under Rule 48 of the CGST Rules, an invoice for goods is prepared in triplicate and marked ORIGINAL FOR RECIPIENT, DUPLICATE FOR TRANSPORTER and TRIPLICATE FOR SUPPLIER. An invoice for services is prepared in duplicate and marked ORIGINAL FOR RECIPIENT and DUPLICATE FOR SUPPLIER. Pick the supply type and copy label above, then print each copy in turn.

Goods: 3 copies

  • Original for recipient
  • Duplicate for transporter
  • Triplicate for supplier

Services: 2 copies

  • Original for recipient
  • Duplicate for supplier
E-invoicing

Does this tool create an e-invoice?

No. It produces a regular GST tax invoice, not an e-invoice. Businesses whose aggregate turnover exceeded ₹5 crore in any financial year from 2017-18 onwards must report their B2B invoices to the Invoice Registration Portal and get an Invoice Reference Number (IRN), under Notification 10/2023-Central Tax with effect from 1 August 2023. Those invoices must also carry a QR code with the IRN embedded in it, as required by Rule 46(r). If that applies to you, use this tool only for drafts and issue the final invoice through your e-invoicing setup.

Check before you issue

  1. 1Turnover: Did aggregate turnover across your PAN exceed ₹5 crore in any year since 2017-18?
  2. 2If yes: Register B2B invoices, credit notes and debit notes on the Invoice Registration Portal to get an IRN.
  3. 3Print: Show the IRN QR code on the invoice, as Rule 46(r) requires.
  4. 4If no: A regular tax invoice like the one this tool makes is enough.
Tax heads

How does the invoice decide between CGST, SGST and IGST?

By comparing the supplier's state with the place of supply. The generator reads the supplier's state from the first two digits of the GSTIN, or from the state you choose. If it matches the place of supply, each line is taxed as CGST plus SGST, split equally (UTGST replaces SGST in union territories without a legislature). If the states differ, the full rate is charged as IGST. Rates per line follow the slabs in force from 22 September 2025: 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 18% and 40%, per the 56th GST Council release. To check a single amount first, use the GST calculator.

Your data

Is the invoice data stored anywhere?

Only in your own browser. The invoice is built on your device and the details you enter are not uploaded. A draft is kept in local storage so it survives a page refresh; use Clear form to remove it. The tool checks that each GSTIN has the right format but does not verify it with the GST portal, so confirm your customer's GSTIN separately.

If you raise invoices every day, a generator gets repetitive. Compare GST billing software or browse more free ERP tools. This tool is for general guidance and is not tax or legal advice.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this GST invoice generator free, and is my data uploaded?

Yes, it is free with no sign-up. The invoice is built entirely in your browser: the details you type are not uploaded to a server. A draft is kept in your browser's local storage on this device so you can come back to it, and you can clear it at any time with the Clear form button.

What details are mandatory on a GST tax invoice?

Under Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, a tax invoice must show the supplier's name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive invoice number of up to 16 characters; the date; the recipient's name, address and GSTIN or UIN if registered; HSN or SAC codes; a description, quantity and unit; the taxable value after discount; the tax rate and amount for each tax head; the place of supply; the delivery address if different; whether tax is payable on reverse charge; and a signature or digital signature.

Does this tool create an e-invoice with an IRN?

No. This tool creates a regular GST tax invoice only. Businesses whose aggregate turnover exceeded ₹5 crore in any financial year from 2017-18 onwards must issue e-invoices with an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) from the Invoice Registration Portal, under Notification 10/2023-Central Tax from 1 August 2023, and those invoices must carry the QR code with the embedded IRN.
