DPMO & Six Sigma calculator
Calculate Defects Per Million Opportunities, process yield, and sigma level. Benchmark your quality performance against Six Sigma standards.
DPMO (Defects Per Million Opportunities) normalizes defect rates across products with different complexity levels. It divides total defects by (units inspected × defect opportunities per unit), then multiplies by one million. A Six Sigma process has just 3.4 DPMO — meaning 99.99966% yield. Most manufacturing processes operate between 3σ (66,800 DPMO) and 4σ (6,210 DPMO).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is DPMO and how is it calculated?+
DPMO = (Total Defects / (Units Inspected × Opportunities per Unit)) × 1,000,000. It normalizes quality measurement across products with different complexity — a circuit board with 200 solder points has 200 opportunities per unit. Lower DPMO means higher quality.
What DPMO corresponds to Six Sigma?+
Six Sigma means 3.4 DPMO or 99.99966% yield. The sigma levels are: 1σ = 690,000 DPMO (31% yield), 2σ = 308,000 (69.2%), 3σ = 66,800 (93.3%), 4σ = 6,210 (99.38%), 5σ = 233 (99.977%), 6σ = 3.4 (99.99966%).
What is a defect opportunity?+
A defect opportunity is any measurable characteristic of a product or process that could fail to meet a customer requirement. A printed circuit board might have opportunities at each solder joint, component placement, and trace. Counting opportunities correctly is critical — undercounting inflates DPMO, overcounting deflates it.
How do I improve my sigma level?+
Follow the DMAIC methodology: Define the problem, Measure current performance (DPMO), Analyze root causes, Improve the process, and Control with ongoing monitoring. Focus on the vital few defect types that account for most failures (Pareto analysis). Even moving from 3σ to 4σ eliminates 90% of defects.
What is the difference between DPMO and defect rate?+
Defect rate = defective units / total units. It counts a unit as either pass or fail regardless of how many defects it has. DPMO counts individual defects against individual opportunities, giving a more granular view. A unit with 3 defects out of 50 opportunities contributes differently to DPMO than to defect rate.
