If you are already using LangChain to build agents and chains, LangSmith offers deep integration — traces are automatically captured via LangChain callbacks, the prompt playground integrates with LangChain Hub, and dataset management connects directly to LangChain eval harnesses. For pure LangChain shops, LangSmith is the path-of-least-resistance observability tool.

The framework lock-in constraint

The core architectural constraint is framework lock-in. LangSmith is designed for LangChain workflows. If you use LlamaIndex for RAG, CrewAI for multi-agent, AutoGen for research workflows, or a custom agent loop — you are either manually instrumenting OTel spans to get partial LangSmith coverage or you are outside LangSmith's intended use case.
